BERLIN WITH POTSDAM - LEGENDARY OBSERVATORIES

Science and HISTORY / ASTRONOMY - SHORT tour

INTRODUCTION

The history of historical observatories in Berlin and Potsdam with Rathenow is impressive. The oldest and largest German public observatory with the longest telescope in the world is located in Alt-Treptow. Here we have arranged a lecture with Prof. Dieter B. Herrmann exclusively in the Archenhold observatory. The original Berlin observatory has been located in Potsdam since 1913, the long history of which we get to know on a guided tour, as well as that of the famous Great Refractor, which is presented in renovated splendour on the Telegraphenberg in the traditional astrophysical observatory. A highlight in optics history is the Rollf`sche brachy medial telescope, which we can examine in Rathenow during an exclusive guided tour in the optics park, and which we are allowed to climb in good weather and do spectroscopy. The programme is rounded off with getting to know the New-Old Berlin in Berlin-Mitte. On this trip we are at home in the centre of Berlin-Mitte near the Spree in the 4 * NH hotel.

ITINERARY

ITINERARY

Arrival and exploration of Berlin-Mitte
Your own journey to Berlin by train / plane or car. After check-in at the hotel (possible from 2:00 p.m.), a welcome drink and cake in a special restaurant A rickshaw ride (if the weather permits) shows you the New-Old Berlin and the course of the former wall of Berlin-Mitte. After a leisurely boat trip on the Spree, we go on a tour of Alexanderplatz with an appraisal of the Urania world clock. Afterwards there is the possibility to cast a grandiose all-round view of the federal capital Berlin on Germany’s tallest building, the Berlin TV tower, on the panorama level (203m high). We will give you restaurant recommendations for dinner.
4 nights / breakfast in the 4 * NH hotel in Berlin Mitte

After breakfast, the hotel takes the S-Bahn to Alt-Treptow to the famous Archenhold observatory, where we have arranged an exclusive tour. Prof. Dr. Dieter B. Herrmann (30 years director of the observatory and founding director of the Zeiss-Groß-Planetarium) will greet us there personally and shed light on the history of the historic observatory. Starting at Treptower Park, we then enjoy a boat trip on the Spree and when we arrive in Köpenick, we learn more details and stories about the captain of Köpenick in the town hall. Our onward journey by tram takes us to the Orbital, a space training facility at the FEZ leisure center in Berlin-Wuhlheide, which we would like to take this opportunity to present to you. Afterwards, those participants who wish to do so can go to the Zeiss-Groß-Planetarium in the Prenzlauer Berg district, where we also recommend an evening meal in one of the numerous restaurants. The day is professionally supervised by Ditmar Stachowski, who was an employee of the Archenhold observatory for more than 20 years and also the technical director of the Zeiss-Gruß planetarium.
Breakfast in the hotel. Today the Regional Express takes you to Potsdam for a guided visit in the morning to the Babelsberg observatory, which is located on the premises of the AIP (Astropysical Institute) and was actually the original Berlin observatory. After lunch in the institute’s canteen, we visit the famous Great Refractor on Telegraphenberg in the astrophysical observatory, where the “Einstein Tower” is also located. Return to Berlin around 4:30 p.m., or optionally enjoy a historical city tour through Potsdam (highly recommended!).
Today after breakfast we go to Rathenow, an important centre of German optics, where the optics park with Rolf’s refractor awaits us for a guided tour. After lunch, a visit to a well-known optics company is planned. In the evening in Berlin, for example, visit a cabaret show in the Admirals-Palast right next to your hotel or a few doors down the world’s largest revue, enjoy a show in the Friedrichstadt-Palast.

Breakfast and farewell in the hotel. Or an extension in Berlin with the opportunity to visit the ILA (International Aerospace Exhibition. The Museum Island is not far from the hotel).

Optional Day Tour to Vevey and Montreux with Chillon Fort

In the morning after breakfast, the coach takes you to the French part of Switzerland to Vevey to the Chaplin Museum. Charlie Chaplin lived here with his family from 1953 until his death in 1977. On a guided tour, we visit the manor house, which has been restored and restored to its former glory. This is where Chaplin’s private and family life comes back to life. The studio-museum, newly built in 2016, is dedicated to Chaplin’s films and his impoverished childhood in London, which influenced his work. At the foot of Lake Geneva and the Swiss Alps, you can stroll through the landscaped garden that Chaplin was so delighted with. Visit Montreux for lunch and enjoy the view of Lake Geneva. Exclusive lunch in a selected restaurant directly on Lake Geneva. The third part of the day tour takes us to Chillon Castle, also located directly on Lake Geneva. A visit to the castle gives us an overview of eight centuries of architecture, history and culture. (8-9 hour day tour):
