An astronomical adventure trip to the land of the largest observatories in the world. We visit the Cerro Paranal with the famous four 8.2 m VLT telescopes and their interferometry system, a jewel of the ESO. In addition to La Silla, an exclusive visit to the construction level of the ALMA project is also planned. In terms of landscape, the Atacama Desert and the fantastic world of the high Andes are on the programme. From San Pedro de Atacama, the gateway to the Andes, it goes to the salt cordillera, the fourth largest salt lake in the world, the picturesque highland lagoons and the famous El Tatio geysers. Telescope observations in the impressive sky of the southern hemisphere complete this eventful tour programme.

Arrival via Sao Paulo or Madrid in Santiago around 11.00 a.m. local time. Transfer to the hotel in Santiago, afternoon: Guided tour of the city center with the opportunity to exchange money, lunch and a visit to Santa Lucia, the picturesque founder mountain of Santiago. Evening: Presentation of the travel programme.
Hotel Fundador, Santiago, 1 night / breakfast

Hotel La Serena Resort, 4 nights / breakfast

Free day available at the beach or exploring the town of La Serena.
La Serena, the second oldest city in Chile after Santiago, is characterized by its colonial architectural style. The symbol of the city is the Faro lighthouse on La Serena beach. Excursion to the Pinguino de Humboldt National Park, 100 km north of La Serena. Boat trip (approx. 30 euros) to Choros Island with its interesting fauna: penguins, sea lions, dolphins and many sea birds. Then you have the opportunity to have lunch in the fishing village of Choros Bajos.
Drive to La Silla, ESO’s first southern observatory, approx. 160 km north of La Serena. The longest road in the world, the Pan Americana, leads us through a desert landscape with many mountains and an interesting coastline. Visit to the La Silla observatory (2400 m), which has 15 telescopes. The main instruments are the legendary 3.6 m telescope, the 3.6 m New Technology Telescope (NTT) and the 2.2 m telescope. Here, ground-breaking technical innovations, such as active and adaptive optics, were implemented and tested.

Time for sun, beach and sea in the morning. Midday: Flight to Santiago de Chile.
Hotel Holiday Inn, Santiago, 1 night

Early noon: Flight to Calama and subsequent transfer to the almost biblical landscape of the high plateau of San Pedro de Atacama, the “gateway to the Andes”.
Get to know the desert oasis of San Pedro de Atacama at the foot of the high Andes range.
Hosteria San Pedro, San Pedro, 4 nights / breakfast

An eventful day in the world of the high Andes: the Salar de Atacama, an almost endless salt lake of 3,000 square kilometers on the San Pedro plateau (approx. 2,300 m). Visit the flamingo colony at the Chaxa lagoon. Lunch in the Andean village of Socaire and return via the Toconao oasis. Then visit the famous valley of the moon and the salt cordillera.
For today we are planning a visit to the major astronomical project ALMA. (The visit can only be confirmed at short notice). The large control center is located in the base station at 2800 m. This is where the 12m telescopes are serviced and tested before they are brought to the Chajnantor plain with gigantic special transporters. A total of 66 of these sub-millimeter telescopes will be put into operation from here over the next few years. If the date cannot be confirmed, we will alternatively plan a tour in the Andes.
At sunrise we reach the El Tatio geyser field at 4,300 m (warm clothing required!). When the first rays of sunshine reach the geyser field, the steam geysers appear in an impressive way in the midst of an unreal volcanic landscape. Even at this altitude we will still be able to spot flamingos and the vicuñas llama species.

Drive through the Atacama Desert to Calama, where we plan to visit the large Chuquicamata copper mine if possible. Then continue to Antofagasta. This young port city with 225,000 inhabitants is located with the extremely dry Atacama desert in the hinterland, right at the foot of the coastal cordillera. Formally built into the desert, it surprises with a Mediterranean flair. Visit the famous rock formation La Portada off the coast.
Hotel Radisson, Antofagasta., 2 nights / breakfast

Drive to the largest and most modern ESO observatory on Cerro Paranal. Visit to the famous VLT telescope system at an altitude of 2635 m. It consists of the four 8.2 m telescopes Antu, Kueyen, Melipal and Yepun, four mobile 1.8 m telescopes, two large pre-observation telescopes and above all the state-of-the-art interferometry system. The Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) is the world’s largest and most modern system for optical interferometry and has found one of the best telescope locations in the world under the favourable conditions on Cerro Paranal.
In the morning flight from Antofagasta to Santiago de Chile and in the evening flight back to Germany.
Via Madrid or Sao Paulo arrival in Germany / Frankfurt Main approx. 6:00 p.m.

Since Chile is on the other half of the globe, the seasons are exactly opposite to those in Europe. Its climatic zones are extremely different due to the significant longitudinal extent. The deserts in the north have no significant rainfall, the Humboldt Current cools the coast and gives it spring-like temperatures all year round. In the Atacama Desert, the temperature differences between day and night are greater than the seasonal. The central zone has a Mediterranean climate: hot summers and rainy cool winters. Towards the south, temperatures decrease, and rainfall increases. Exceptions are the Magellanic and Tierra del Fuego cold steppes, where the climate is dry.
Although tourism is usually concentrated in the summer months of December to February in all parts of the country. Chile falls in the category of all year-round touring countries. If you want to get to know the Chilean winter in the deep south in July, you should inquire beforehand about the opening times of the hotels. The ski centres in the central zone and the Little South are then open. All destinations in Chile are also suitable for a visit in the spring and autumn months.
