NAMIBIA - Photograph The Southern Night Sky

Photo and astronomy tour with Stefan Seip

INTRODUKTION

An extensive astrophotographic programme awaits us. Stefan Seip will look after the travel participants with the planning, the implementation of the nocturnal observations, the image processing and the vacation photography. The trip is suitable for laypeople as well as advanced.
The programme includes workshops and lectures on the subject of photography of planets, photography of the starry sky with landscape, line trace recordings, a constellation tour in the southern sky, deep-sky recordings and image processing techniques. Photo excursions during the day in the charming surroundings of the farm should of course not be missed. There are several mounts and several telescopes available exclusively on the guest farm for the practical part of the seminar. Individual requests are taken into account whenever possible.
We dedicate ourselves to the splendid southern sky with its interesting deep-sky objects, the zodiacal light and the meteors of the Delta Aquarids and Capricornidren. Our summer time means Namibian winter with long nights, so that almost the entire southern sky can be observed. The center of the Milky Way is high in the evening sky. We also experience the two Magellanic Clouds and many famous celestial objects: the Southern Cross with coal sack, the brilliant Eta-Carinae Nebula, distant galaxies, the fantastic globular clusters of the southern sky and much more.
A tour of the H.E.S.S. project with the world’s largest Cherenkov telescope rounds off the astronomical programme.
Scenic highlights
There are optional trips to the Quiver Tree Forest, a trip to Gamsberg, the local Table Mountain, and a rhinoceros tour. In addition, we offer the option of a three-day safari through the Namib Desert during the trip. It goes to the historic seaside resort of Swakopmund and an interesting boat trip in the Walfis Bay, where sea lions can be expected on board. The famous dune world of Sossusvlei will not be missing here.

ITINERARY

Departure from Frankfurt/M. with Lufthansa at around 8.10 p.m.

Arrival at Windhoek Airport around 7:00 a.m. local time. Drive to Windhoek and transfer to the guest farm. Time to relax. In the evening presentation of the travel programme.

Spectacular landscape shots in which the stars appear as lines as a result of the earth’s rotation. Many shorter exposed single shots are combined to the desired end result by image processing software. Also included: handling of the necessary software
  • Planetary photography
Ideally, a video camera is used to photograph planets. Special software calculates a sharp total image from the many individual images in the video. Also included: handling of the special software for evaluating the planetary videos.
  • The tracking camera
The camera and the photo lens follow the movement of the stars, which enables longer exposure times. Suitable motifs: The Milky Way, the zodiacal light, the counter-light, constellations, meteors, …. A number of large deep sky objects are now within reach of telephoto lenses. Also included: handling of an astronomical mount.
  • Telescope as a lens
The camera is connected to the telescope and looks through the telescope optics. With comparatively short exposure times, pictures of the moon, the sun, planets with moons, double stars, …
  • Deep sky objects through the telescope
The highest level of astrophotography: calibration with dark and bright field images. Also included: handling of the software for calibration (data reduction) and further processing.
  • Autoguiding
A special autoguider camera takes care of the tracking control. Handling a setup of an auto guider.

Your photography expert and lecturer:
Stefan Seip

The photographer and astrophotographer Stefan Seip lives in Stuttgart – in southwest Germany in the middle of Europe. Before he started his own business in 2003, he worked in the IT industry. He completed his natural science studies in biology with the qualification “Diplom-Biologist”. Seip gained an international reputation with his photographs. In German-speaking countries he is best known as the author of several books on the subject of celestial and astrophotography. He regularly writes columns, test reports, practical tips and reports for leading magazines. In many lectures, workshops and star tours, he passes on his knowledge, which is also his passion for an interested audience. Stefan Seip seeks and finds his motifs all over the world. He is not always traveling alone, but also works as a specialist lecturer and course leader and offers his guests the opportunity to experience and photograph certain places or celestial events. He has been a member of the TWAN (The World at Night) photography association since it was founded. In 2013 he was appointed “Photo Ambassador” by ESO. His photographic spectrum extends far beyond celestial and astro photography. His preference for artistic photography in classic black and white becomes evident.
